We want to leave it open to whatever special baby God wants to send us. We love all children and here in Hawaii there are all kinds of races and many mixed races.

I am excited to announce registration has opened for Camp Baobab, the first ever culture camp for transracially adopted youth in Texas! Camp Baobab is sponsored by Parenting Across Color and will take place in Austin June 9 - 11, 2011 for children ages 5 to 11 whose adoptions have already been consummated. African American/African/Caribbean children will be immersed in African American culture through art, musics, dance, and history. Therapeutic play will take place in age appropriate groups.

Space is limited to 50 kids, so don't wait! Register now! The cost of camp is $40 per child. There will be a Transracial Parenting Conference on Saturday, June 11 for adoptive and foster parents. Topics include White Privilege, Dealing with Racism, Special Needs of AA Boys, and Hair/Skin Care. Foster parents will receive continuing education credit. The cost is $25/couple and $15/single parent. Lunch is included.

Regarding children fearing they will be sent away -- I experienced that in a different way. Maya has a cousin by birth. A girl exactly her age, by a month. For a couple of years Savannah would cry when I came near her. I finally came to believe that she saw me as "the baby snatcher." She understood that Maya was her cousin and that she didn't live with the rest of the family. I think she was scared. It took me years for Savannah to smile at me. Now she will even let me hug her. Patience with your daughter. It will make sense little by little. The most important thing, as you understand, is that she knows that is her house, you are her parents, and no one can change that.

Comment by Donna Stacy on March 28, 2011 at 5:29pm: Oh- Michelle!! My favorite adoption book is "I wished for you" It is about a bear family! The adopted bear is a different color than the mama bear.... that might help!! I love it!! Such a sweet book. My daughter is also biracial.... oh how I love my girl!! I am also a single mom... so I know she will have some questions as she gets older. Her BM was CC so I hope she will send a photo at some point... she wanted a more closed adoption at first although on paper it is semi open.
