@Anna I completely agree with you. @Von My attitude towards that attachment has changed over the years. The more I get to know my birth family the more I see how much I am like my adopted family. But both families are very important to me. @Carys…

I was born in El Salvador and my parents where revolutionaries in the civil war. I was separated from my family and adopted to America. I grew up here not knowing anything about my past. In 1997 I was reunited with my birth family and traveled down to Central America to meet them. Since then we have become a big family.

How do you define family?

When I tell people that I was reconnected with my birth father sometimes they say "Oh so you found your real family?"

This makes me think, what is your REAL family? Is it the people you grow up with or the people who are related to you, or maybe both?

One of my favorites quotes that I use a lot when telling my adoption story is this:

My adoptive mother and I share our adoption experiences.

This coming Wednesday at 5pm my adoptive mother and I are going to be talking to a group of college students about my adoption story and finding my birth family. She will be talking about her experiences adopting me and how meeting my birth family inspired her to write a book. I will be talking about what it was like meeting them and what it has meant to me over the years.

We are going to be streaming the event online to share our experiences with others. If you would like to join us the addres… Continue

Nelson,

I spent Friday checking out ur site. I watched the interview u gave on TV. You have an amazing story.

It inspired me to start the search for my mom. I contacted an adoption angel who found my mom in about 30 mins. My mom passed away 6 yrs ago but I am trying to contact a sister.

I also talked to Sydney who told me she talked to you also about doing a guest blog for her. She also mentioned doing a teleconference with you. That would be cool.

Thanks for the link. I will let u know when I post on my blog. Thanks again

I missed your talk at Wesley. I really hope you taped it. I would love to see it

I have not posted your blog yet I have been busy finishing up the book and preparing and attendind the heritage camp(it went really well)

Also now I can't find the video you did for me. Do you still have it? If you do I can post to blog next Wednesday I promise.

I am glad to see things are going well for you. I still think somewhere down the road we will have to meet up and do a conference together

are you familar with The North American Council on Adoptable Children? They have an annual conference. I hope to speak there this year. It is in Hartford Connecticut in August 2010.

Keep telling your story it is a great one

By the way have did Wesley go?

Nelson,

Sorry it took so long to get back with you.

The questions I would like are typical questions we get.

What made you want to look for your birth parents
How did your adoptive parents respond to your desire to find your birth parents
How did you find them. Where did you start How long did it take

What was the response when you initially contacted your birth parents?
What was the reunion like and what is your relationship with them like now
How do you feel about finding them. It the void that I lot of people talk about now filled?

I know those are a lot of questions so just cover what you can. I gotta tell your your story is an inspiring one and a lot of those questions above are for me too. I am considering to start the search again just need a little nudge.

Thanks again

You can pick. You have a very interesting story I would love to hear about your birth parents and your reunion and searching for them.
I haven't done that yet so I can't speak on it but I know present adoptive parents are interested in that and also how your adoptive parents responded to your wanting to find your parents.

That would be very interesting.

Nelson,

I was wondering if you would be interested in writing an entry to me blog on your experiences as a transracial adoptee. The length is up to you. Just trying to get different views other than mine. Let me know

Nelson,
I will definately keep you in mind. I went to an adoption conference this summer and was shocked at the lack of input by adoptees.

Again we have so much to offer and can help so many
