When I tell people that I was reconnected with my birth father sometimes they say "Oh so you found your real family?"

This makes me think, what is your REAL family? Is it the people you grow up with or the people who are related to you, or maybe both?

One of my favorites quotes that I use a lot when telling my adoption story is this:

"Losing ones family obligous us to find ones family. Not always the family that is our blood but the family that can become our blood." - Sean Connery in Finding Forester

To me it represents the sum of my experiences. I was separated from my birth family but from that tragedy I found a new family. A family that was not of my blood but over the years has become my blood. I think being adopted and being taken care of by people who are not related to you changes how you think of the world family.

So I ask, how do you define family?

Quite the opposite for me although I received some wonderful things from my adopters in terms of skills and attitudes.

@Anna I completely agree with you.

@Von My attitude towards that attachment has changed over the years. The more I get to know my birth family the more I see how much I am like my adopted family. But both families are very important to me.

@Carys Thats great! Me too. :)

Nothing ever alters a biological bond and it's important we don't deny the importance of our biological parents and the two families we lost. The families who raised us are of course important but we will never have the same attachment we lost and hopefully find again.Hope you feel part of the world family of adoptees too!

Family is formed by love in your heart not by the blood that flows through your heart.
