Adoption Voices

I was very excited for Oprah's show on the popular sitcom, Modern Family recently. Modern Family has quickly become one of my favorite shows!

During this episode, Oprah brought on a real Modern Family. A lesbian couple who were both the biological mother and father of the baby (one of the mom's is transgendered and froze her sperm before having her operation). I thought this was wonderful that they could have a baby, but the biological mom made a comment to Oprah, something along the lines of: "I always thought I would have to adopt..that I'd never be able to have a child of my own."

I know as an adoptive parent, I'm pretty sensitive about wording, but there it is again...adoption is having a child of your "own". I was particularly surprised to hear this comment on a show about Modern Family and how everyone goes about creating their "own" family in different ways.

I don't think people think about their wording until they become an adoptive parent themselves. I am sure that the same couple would pick up inappropriate language if it related to gender or gay rights ect. I think many people if they knew they were being offensive would retract their words and this couple is creating their own family in a non-tradional way also and you would think would be more sensative.
