- Share a little about your adoption story
- My husband and I were infertile for 8 years - but even when we were dating we had discussed adoption. Both of us had grown up around multiracial adoptive families and had a heart for it from a young age. Once we realized we were dealing with infertility we began to pursue various adoption options. We became involved with Adoptive Family groups - and began networking with people in various groups. Eventually we learned that Catholic Social Services would work with us on a biracial adoption because we weren't Catholic. We were able to adopt our daughter, a 10 week old Jamaican-American, after a 2 year process. This was a closed adoption. In the next 6 years we experienced 2 very difficult pregnancies. When we realized we would no long pursue that route again we began to look into adoption options again. Since we had subsequently moved we looked for a new agency. We began to work with Bethany Christian Services ... and eventually met with a Birth mother who chose us to parent her unborn son. We met several times and eventually received a call when he was born. We had given him his name and were making plans to bring him home when we received a call saying that the birth mom had decided to parent. That was a HUGE loss for us - and we took about 9 months before we would even consider another adoption. When we got the call from the agency asking if we were ready to consider another birth mom - we really needed to process whether we were ready. We decided it was time to begin again - and began by meeting the birth mom and her family. We spent the next few months getting to know them all ... and knew that she was carrying our newest son. On the day he was born my husband was away - but after we got the call, my oldest daughter (then 11) and I made the trip to the hospital to visit the mom and baby. It was a very special moment. We had a special few days preparing for his homecoming - and we blinked our eyes and he's now 14 years old and 6' 2" - and we've maintained a relationship with his birth mother all these years.

Parenting Alone
We have been through 2 adoptions (1984 & 1995) and two pregnancies (1987 & 1990) - and each child was desired and cherished... but the week my youngest son turned 3, my husband of 19 years left this earth for heaven after a 10 1/2 month fight against cancer. Since that day 11 years ago I have parented alone - with support of our church and some family and friends.

As your adopted children become adults...
Though we adopted our children as infants (at birth and 10 weeks), I've blinked my eyes and they are now 25 and 14. Both situations were SO different... One a closed adoption in the early 80s and the other an open adoption from the mid 90s. Their reactions to it, in which personalities are also a factor, are so very different, and yet I've seen some underlying 'attachment' issues with both of them over the years.
